8. The Streets of Heaven
Here’s a darling from the 70’s when Susan and I lived in the “nearby community” of Meher Spiritual Center. As we began meeting Baba’s Mandali and hearing so many of their wonderful stories, our longing to be and live with Him in human form intensified. Hence the lyric: “Won’t you please, please come back for me?” I love singing this with my dear wife and companion.

Words and music by Darryl Smith
The streets of heaven are paved with gold.
I don’t know but I’ve been told.
Your smile was sweet and tender. It made them all surrender.
I have heard these words before.
Your love set hearts on fire, consumed all desire,
many memories recall.
No mind can erase the thrill of your embrace.
I don’t know but, I was told.
Chorus: So won’t you please come back for me?
Won’t you please come back and take me with you?
Won’t you please, please come back and take me with you?
I don’t want to be left behind.
I spend my life these days echoing your praise. What more can I do?
Although I never met you,my heart cannot forget you.
Your love alone is true.
And when I heard your call, I gave you my all.
Guess I was, a little late.
The words you left behind satisfy my mind, but,
700 years is too long to wait!
Chorus – 2xs
