Circa 1978 He Is the King Words and music by Darryl Smith He is the king – and I belong to Him. This world is His – His love is in everything. What more can I do – but try to serve Him? What more can I give – but all that I have? What more can I learn – but He’s All in All, for one and all - Meher Baba. He cares for me – that I may care for Him. He gives me love – that I may love Him. If I am hungry – I am fed. If I am weary – He gives me rest. If I am lonely – He’s my friend, the only one – Meher Baba. What more need I – and yet, these tears I weep? Each passing joy – alas, is bitter sweet. Each day I pray to love Him more. Each night, more earnest than before. And though He waits so patiently, I’m never really free – for Meher Baba. This song is His – Its notes belong to Him. He gives the tune – and I must sing along. And if I’m haunted by the sound Of empty words spinning around I know that this will go someday – when His love is really found – Meher Baba. (repeat last three lines)

Day Has Now Begun Words and music by Darryl Smith, 2007 Day has now begun, dark night bows to sun. The stars cover their eyes and the moon slips from the sky. Birds awaken me with feverish song. Still I wonder where I belong. My body’s heavy, my mind is numb. Only You know what I’ll become. Refrain: All I do is hold on to You all along the way. All I do is hold on to You remember and obey. Did you design this very moment? Did you plan for this? Did you know my whole life long would be trembling, trembling for Your kiss? It won’t be long said the dust on the ground. Just believe said the leaves on the trees. Just keep strong I heard the wind resound. His love will bring you to your knees. In spite of what I’ve been, in spite of what I am. This longing grows and grows; It never seems to end! Sometimes this pain seems so much, longing for Your touch! Each lesson learned must be part of the story and take its place as such. Day has now begun, dark night bows to sun. The stars cover their eyes and the moon slips from the sky. Birds awaken me with feverish song. And now I know where I belong. In Your arms my fair Meher, may my home be always there!

Come a Little Closer Words and music by Darryl Smith, 2006 We’ll I’ve been wrong so many times but one time I know I was right: When first I saw You and realized that truth could awaken my soul. Your truth like water ran through these hard rocks of misery and promised to carry me home. And soon I knew this mountainous ego would crumble and give itself to the sea. Chorus: Come a little closer-now. Stay a little longer-somehow Let me hold on to You till I’m a little stronger And when the storm subsides and the thunder rolls away We’ll be together forever this is what I pray. Many many years have gone by since that moment that I first heard Your name. Seems I’ve hardly begun to do what must be done still I know I’m not the same. Every moment I’m beholden to You for so much you do. I’ll keep Your name on my lips, this world will never eclipse the feeling I have for you! I know You’re going but You’ll be back again, that’s just the way that you are Life’s such a treasure, a divine pleasure with you the Avatar Meher Baba, my Beloved I hold you in my Heart And never ever forget me your lover for I was Yours from the start And then, and then, and then, when the storm’s gone away We’ll be together forever this is what I pray

The Streets of Heaven c1977 - 8-31-13 (CD ver) Words and music by Darryl Smith The streets of heaven are paved with gold. I don’t know but I’ve been told. Your smile was sweet and tender. It made them all surrender. I have heard these words before. Your love set hearts on fire, consumed all desire, many memories recall. No mind can erase the thrill of your embrace. I don’t know but, I was told. Chorus: So won’t you please come back for me? Won’t you please come back and take me with you? Won’t you please, please come back and take me with you? I don’t want to be left behind. I spend my life these days echoing your praise. What more can I do? Although I never met you,my heart cannot forget you. Your love alone is true. And when I heard your call, I gave you my all. Guess I was, a little late. The words you left behind satisfy my mind, but, 700 years is too long to wait! Chorus – 2xs

Surrender 05:15
Surrender c 2002 Words adapted from Meher Baba Music by Darryl Smith You know I will not say it any more. You know I won’t repeat what’s said before. You know I cannot tell you again. You will surely know in the end. You gotta surrender…surrender …surrender. More than just to love is to obey. More than to obey is to surrender. This then is the song we shall pray. Let us all lifelong remember. You gotta surrender…surrender …surrender. Time will heal the pain you feel today. Love will wash your sense of self away when you surrender. Ohhh….Ohhh We will surrender… Break: Every thing you hear and say. Every part you try to play. Every little bit you feel. Every thing you think is real. Every time you want to cry. Even when it’s not a lie. Every deed you try to do. Everything you think is you. Surrender, oh oh, surrender, oh oh, surrender…surrender. Loving makes us long to obey and one day oh, one day Loving makes us long to obey and one day, one day we will surrender Ohhh….Ohhh We will surrender…surrender.

Love Burns the Lover c1995 Words and music Darryl Smith 1. You’ve heard it once before, I’ll say it once again, When love comes to your door, You must let love in There’s nothing you can do, There’s nowhere you can go, When love comes ‘round for you, You will surely know. Refrain: Love burns the lover Love burns the lover, Nothing can remain. You will discover Love steals the heart, But such a loss is gain. 2. Well I do not know why, But here is what they say, Begins with a sigh, And takes your breath away. It sweeps you off your feet, It turns you upside down, You cannot retreat, Once you have been found. Oh hear love’s call There can be no mistake, This is what it takes. There’s no way out You need not try, You’ve no choice but to die. Refrain: Love burns the lover, No one’s left behind. Love steals the heart, This is what you’ll find. (Instrumental) 3. And if this is your fate, You know what you must do, You simply have to wait, And to your heart be true, Forget all your thoughts, Give up all your deeds, Unlearn what was taught, And feel what your heart needs. This yearning you feel, May it never end, It alone is real, And you are just pretend. Give up all you know, Let go all you dare, Risk that love may grow, Let this be your prayer. Refrain: Love burns the lover Love burns the lover, Nothing can remain. You will discover Love steals the heart, But such a loss is gain. Coda: You’ve heard it once before, I’ll say it once again, When love comes to your door, You must let love in.

Eruch's Prayer Beloved Baba I remain beholden to you for everything that you have done for me in spite of what I am and how I am. You have always overlooked my weaknesses and forgiven me my trespasses. You have never once chastised me; on the contrary, you have always showered your love upon me and your graces upon me. I have no words to express my gratitude but to utter: O Baba, O Baba! O Baba, I am grateful to you for everything. I remain grateful to you ever and ever. O Baba, I beseech you, implore you, and beg of You never, never ever let me down. Baba never ever let me down; never ever reject me, but accept me as I am and how I am. O Baba, guard me and guide me and help me. Hold my hand and lead me on till the very end. Fill me with your love from top to bottom, from side to side, inside and outside, so that your love pervades and permeates me, engulfs and envelops me, and all that is - is your love and not I. I remain resigned to your Will, and let Thy Will be done, always. (Please contact Avatar Meher Baba Trust for copyright information if publishing this prayer.)

Our Sole Companion Words and music by Darryl Smith, 2009 When this world makes us weary and passing pleasures pass us by When the truth looks too scary and one more hill’s too high to climb When gloom loom and runs deep in our veins When clouds of doubt are all that remain, Chorus: Oh, You are our sole companion, our only true and constant friend. You are our sole protector. On You we completely depend. From beginningless beginning, till the endless end Both mother and father: You are the Avatar! Meher Baba, Meher Baba, Meher Baba You know each heartache we are feeling. You can count every teardrop we cry. You listen to the thoughts we are thinking. You can be touched by the slightest sigh. And when we’re hopeless and helplessly Yours We’ll surrender and You will throw open the doors! You are our springtide, Beloved. Angels sing when You arrive. You correct the course of creation, attune the heart strings of our lives. So we must take our turn, take our chance So we can join the fun: Love’s great romance!

about

Appreciation:

A deepening appreciation over 40 years for the love, expressed by Avatar Meher Baba has inspired the creation of these songs.

I also am grateful for my talented family:

my brother-in-law, Mark Saunders, for his versatile musicianship on electric and bass guitars, mandolin, percussion and vocal arrangements and for his adept recording, editing, and mixing skills;

his wife, Margo Hennebach, whose vocal ability shines throughout the album;

my son, Darwin, whose gift for melodic movement, evidenced here in several guitar and vocal contributions, as well as his editing skills significantly contribute to this CD;

my most devoted and enthusiastic supporter, Susan, my wife and best friend, who has patiently listened through multiple iterations of details related to this entire project;

and finally, for the fellowship and support of so many in the Baba Community, especially John and Carol Gunn and “cousin,” Cathy Riley, who deserve special recognition for sharing their love, interest, and musical recording expertise during the production of this album!

These words and this music were often sparked by inspiration experienced with friends and lovers of Meher Baba. I hope you, the listener, enjoy the pleasure this music has given me. May it help you to remember the One at the center of creation.
