10. Love Burns the Lover
This selection inspired by Meher Baba’s words, Love and Devotion,* describes the fire of love for the Beloved that consumes the limited ego. I had hoped for a cello to convey the heartfelt sentiment in this melody and was fortuitously introduced to Alan Toda-Ambaras whose talent helps evoke the poignancy of these lyrics.

Love Burns the Lover c1995
Words and music Darryl Smith
1. You’ve heard it once before, I’ll say it once again,
When love comes to your door, You must let love in
There’s nothing you can do, There’s nowhere you can go,
When love comes ‘round for you, You will surely know.
Refrain:
Love burns the lover Love burns the lover, Nothing can remain.
You will discover Love steals the heart, But such a loss is gain.
2. Well I do not know why, But here is what they say,
Begins with a sigh, And takes your breath away.
It sweeps you off your feet, It turns you upside down,
You cannot retreat, Once you have been found.
Oh hear love’s call There can be no mistake, This is what it takes.
There’s no way out You need not try, You’ve no choice but to die.
Refrain:
Love burns the lover, No one’s left behind.
Love steals the heart, This is what you’ll find. (Instrumental)
3. And if this is your fate, You know what you must do,
You simply have to wait, And to your heart be true,
Forget all your thoughts, Give up all your deeds,
Unlearn what was taught, And feel what your heart needs.
This yearning you feel, May it never end,
It alone is real, And you are just pretend.
Give up all you know, Let go all you dare,
Risk that love may grow, Let this be your prayer.
Refrain:
Love burns the lover Love burns the lover, Nothing can remain.
You will discover Love steals the heart, But such a loss is gain.
Coda:
You’ve heard it once before, I’ll say it once again,
When love comes to your door, You must let love in.
