13. Sole Companion
The finale features the spirited cello of Alan Toda-Ambaras and masterful editing by Darwin. I was privileged to perform the original version for Bhau Kalchuri in the Barn at one of his last visits to Meher Spiritual Center. Mark’s dynamic bass throughout and his harmonic embellishment in the final verse are wonderful expressions of the attention he has given to this album.

Our Sole Companion
Words and music by Darryl Smith, 2009
When this world makes us weary and passing pleasures pass us by
When the truth looks too scary and one more hill’s too high to climb
When gloom loom and runs deep in our veins
When clouds of doubt are all that remain,
Chorus:
Oh, You are our sole companion, our only true and constant friend.
You are our sole protector. On You we completely depend.
From beginningless beginning, till the endless end
Both mother and father: You are the Avatar!
Meher Baba, Meher Baba, Meher Baba
You know each heartache we are feeling.
You can count every teardrop we cry.
You listen to the thoughts we are thinking.
You can be touched by the slightest sigh.
And when we’re hopeless and helplessly Yours
We’ll surrender and You will throw open the doors!
You are our springtide, Beloved. Angels sing when You arrive.
You correct the course of creation, attune the heart strings of our lives.
So we must take our turn, take our chance
So we can join the fun: Love’s great romance!
